International activities per study programme

Food Design & Innovation

Fourth year students make an international study visit to a country or region of their choice. In addition to this, each year Food Design & Innovation takes fourth year students to an international food fair (linked to a trend tour of that city). One year this is Sial in Paris, the next Anuga in Cologne.

Second year Food Marketing students embark each year on a retail tour of London.

Animal Husbandry & Animal Care
As of year 2010-2011, second year students are required to make an international study visit during the module Profession & Environment. After an intensive preparation period, students will spend about five days abroad, supervised by two lecturers. Students are divided in two groups, each visiting a different country. They visit several companies during their stay and there is also attention to cultural differences. Afterwards, the two groups exchange experiences. In 2010-2011 the trips were to Poland and England.

Horticulture & Agriculture
In week 5 of the first semester, first year students participate for a week in an Outdoor Event in the Ardennes.

As of year 2010-2011they are joined by the international students of this study programme.  This year, there were about 15 international students, against 40 Dutch. Each year in November, students visit Hortifair in Amsterdam; a major international and professional horticultural networking fair. Horticulture &Agriculture also has contact with Universidad de Almeria (Spain) for student exchange, but HAS students have never attended this university as all study programmes are in Spanish and mainly focus on tropical horticulture. Spanish students however do come to HAS (often from their course Plant Science), a wonderful enrichment of the international component of Horticulture & Agriculture.

Urban & Rural Development
Fourth year students have the option to participate in an international module, the Eureka Programme. Participation used to be compulsory but is now optional. This module is combined with other study programmes (such as Animal Husbandry & Animal Care). Students of different study programmes are teamed up to work on one such module. Participating partner institutions are from Hungary, Finland, Austria, Slovakia, Czech Republic (this is the 'regular pool'), and each year different partners sign up for participation. Location (country) of module rotates.

Food Technology
Since 2009, annually a two day exchange with KATHO (Kortrijk) takes place for fourth year students. Our students travel for two days to KATHO (1st day: to learn about Food Pairing, 2nd day: to shadow a chef). KATHO students who come to HAS will work for two days in the lab.

Each year one or a few Food Technology students go to Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (Spain) to collaborate on research.
